Another San Francisco Trip--Valentine's Day get-away

It is not a coincidence that Rich and I chose to sneak away for Valentine's Day and go to San Francisco. He wasn't able to come along last week for the cousins' trip (pesky job). We had a great time, just the two of us, all alone in San Francisco from Friday to Saturday afternoon. Here are some pictures:

This is the view from our hotel room. It was pouring rain when we arrived, but it cleared up and only sprinkled a bit here and there until after we left. Our favorite thing about this hotel, which we booked randomly on Hotwire, were the his and hers booklights above each side of the bed. Nice!On Saturday, we took a tour of Alcatraz. Here is our boat. The stormy weather made for a beautiful view as well as a turbulent bay (meaning we were ready to give up the view to get off the ferry and get our landlegs back.)

A view of Alcatraz from the boat
A view of the city from Alcatraz. If you haven't done this tour, we highly recommend it if you are ever in SF. We did the audio tour, and we also did a ranger "sitting tour" in which the ranger gave us all the details behind one of the famous escape attempts when the Marines came in a dropped bombs down the pipes. We came right home and put Escape From Alcatraz on our Netflix queue. We spent over two hours touring, and we could have spent another two, but we ran out of time. Really, even the ferry ride over and back is worth the trip because of the fantastic views!

We came back that evening and had heart-shaped pizzas with chocolate fondue for dessert as a family. Here are Daniel, Katie and Beth enjoying the chocolate. (Katie kept up our tradition of making pink pancakes and waffles for breakfast while we were away.)

Beth, Jeffrey and Adam

Dad gets in on the dessert.

A chocolate dipped marshmallow. Yum!

Anna got her share of the yummies too.

Notice anyone missing? Jacob had come down with a fever of 103 and was not interested in eating any of the Valentine's treats. I was so glad to be home early to take care of him (and the four others that have since come down with it.)

I am going to leave this with a little tribute to my sweetie. Rich is the best husband ever. Let me give a few examples. While we were away, it did sprinkle a bit. We only had one umbrella, so he held it up for me the whole time, giving me his arm to hold on. I am sure his arm got tired, but he never complains. Even better, when our Friday night plans to get lottery Wicked tickets didn't work out, we had dinner and then headed back to the hotel. We got into our pjs and snuggled up to watch a movie in our comfy hotel room (which was even more comfy compared to the freezing weather outside.) At Rich's suggestion, we watched Twilight despite the fact that there were many exciting action selections available. Isn't that a sweet guy? He is always the first one up and the last one to eat. He always goes out to run the errands in the rain, and he always carries the baby in from the car. I could go on and on. Thanks for being so wonderful, sweetheart!!

I have to admit Twilight was a fun movie. If they opted to drop the drama and add a few more action sequences, then I might even read the book (but they didn't so I won't).

The trip was great (who can complain spending time with your sweetheart without constant interruptions from the kids), so I'd say it was worth missing the first trip for this one!

So glad you guys had fun. A little secrete, Randy read the first Twilight and told me how mushy it was. So...I haven't read it either or watched the movie. I guess we're just not with it.

Love your valentine traditions. We just might have to steal the pink waffles. :)

Cheryl, It's all because of the teenage daughter and teenage nieces that I read Twilight at all. I am only a luke-warm fan (but don't tell Katie!) David Archuleta, on the other hand, in an LDS phenomenon that I can enjoy without any reservations. ; ) As for Valentine traditions, don't forget the pink milk or juice!

Hooray for getaways and marvelous husbands! May I just ask: Did Katie and Jacob babysit everyone? If so, how did you feel about it? How did they feel about it?

Liz, The older children babysat Friday afternoon, and then a family friend came to spend the night and stayed until we got home. I think they were grateful for the help because Anna takes a lot of work these days. Incidentally, when we asked our friend how it went once we were home, she said she was exhausted and was reminded why she only had two children. ; )

That tour sounds amazing. I love history, it couldn't get any more interesting. Your family traditions are awesome, too bad Jacob was so sick. You two are the cutest couple. So real and true. I love you guys!

I hadn't seen this post! I was thinking you meant the other San Fran. trip! I'm amazed that you came home to heart-shaped pizzas and dessert when you had been gone for the weekend. Your kids are really on top of it! Your comments about Rich were very sweet :)

Well, Katie made the pizza dough, but we were the ones giving them a valentine's treat. It wasn't as idyllic as it sounds. We bought the fondue stuff on the way home, and we made the pizzas when we got home. Then we had no mozzarella cheese so Rich had to go back to the store. Jacob was super sick, and Adam got really mad and refused to eat anything for about half of dessert time. I had to throw a little tantrum because of the fighting. You know, typical family life! ; )

What a great guy you married! Now let's talk about SF ;-)

Dang it! I must not be married to the best guy in the world, because I can't get him to go to Alcatraz with me :( The party pooper. Maybe I'll have to take you along sometime :) Glad you could get away for the weekend like that!

p.s. my guy's pretty sweet otherwise though :)

Rachel, I will go with you to Alcatraz anytime! Let's plan a girls' trip to SF?! Plus, tell Matthew that Rich loved our visit there--and he's the "sit around and play computer games" type, so that tells you something. We watched Escape From Alcatraz last weekend, which really means more when you have actually been there. You know, like watching The Birds means more after you've been there! : )

Oh let's do!!! Matt's been there a couple times and just doesn't care. Would be so much more fun to go with someone who's interested. Are we weird though to want to take a girl's trip to Alcatraz? :D
